Planning your Trip to Austin

Information for All Students visiting Austin

Weather
Winter:  Expect temperatures from the 40’s through the 70’s. Texas weather can vary greatly from day to day, so we advise bringing layers.

Spring:  Temperatures can range from the 50’s through the 80’s. The last few years we’ve had very wet springs, so pack shoes and a jacket that you can wear in the rain. A water bottle and an umbrella may come in handy. Outdoor swimming and recreation is available, so pack a suit if you plan to take advantage of Austin’s legendary swimming springs after your work day.

Summer: Temperatures will range from hot to very, very hot (70’s through 100+). Bring a water bottle, sunblock and a hat if you plan to be outside, and breathable clothing. There’s a ton of outdoor recreation available, so pack a swimsuit. Texans believe in strong air conditioning, so packing layers is also a great idea.

Fall: Expect temperatures from the 70’s through 90’s. If you are not accustomed to Texas heat, we recommend you bring a water bottle to keep hydrated! Outdoor swimming and recreation is still going strong, so pack a suit if you plan to take advantage of Austin’s legendary swimming springs after your work day.

Travel
Flying into Austin’s airport (Austin Bergstrom International, AUS) is the easiest and most convenient. Flying into Dallas or Houston may be less expensive, but it is a painful 3-4 hour drive to Austin from either.

Transportation
You will need transportation upon arrival. APA! cannot provide transportation to/from the airport, your hotel, lunches, or your visits to Austin Animal Center. While APA! Is located in the heart of downtown Austin, Texas is BIG and it is a 25 minute walk to the nearest food or lodging.

Other Transport Options:
RideAustin (rideaustin.com) – A local non-profit rideshare company
CapMetro (capmetro.org) – Austin bus and rail
Lyft, Uber, rentable SmartCars and Taxis are also available

Lodging
There are dozens of hotels available within a short driving distance of Austin Pets Alive! and Austin Animal Center. Apprentices have also used Airbnb or HomeAway in the past and had great experiences. We recommend using Google maps to identify the location of of your apprenticeship and determine which hotels would be most convenient during your time here.

No pressure- but just in case anyone is going to miss a dog taking over the bed at night!  If you’re interested, you can start by filling out the form HERE and just note that you’re in town for the Canine Lifesaving Apprenticeship & would like to have a dog for a sleepover while in Austin.

Food
You are welcome to bring food/drink to the shelter, if you wish. Refrigerators and water fountains are available. There is no food conveniently accessible to the shelter. Vegetarian and vegan options are available at nearly all restaurants in Austin.

We suggest downloading a few food delivery apps before you arrive. Unless you plan to drive to a restaurant or to bring food with you, these apps will most likely be your best bet for meals while on campus. We recommend UberEats,  Favor, or GrubHub but there are many other options available as well! Many restaurants will also allow for “to-go” orders, so consider talking with your fellow apprentices about placing a group order.

You will also receive a list of places nearest to your apprenticeship location in your educational materials.

Extended Stays
If you’ll be staying in Austin beyond the apprenticeship to sight-see, and want dining or recreation advice, our staff will be more than happy to provide recommendations!

Safety
Austin is, generally, very safe, progressive, and LGBT-friendly.  Use common sense and good judgement, as you would when traveling anywhere.

Our team has worked on a personalized list of some of our favorite things around town! You can click here to see some of our recommendations. This and a list of local lunch options is provided to students in their learning materials on their first day of instruction.
