All students should complete their pre-work through Maddie’s University prior to their apprenticeship, this is tracked for completion. Links below are provided for your convenience and are un-tracked.

Please complete the following before your arrive:

Review the following documentation before arrival:

Start and End Times

Students should plan to arrive at the Austin Animal Center at 9:00AM on the first day of their apprenticeship. Expect to be on-site until at least 5:00 or 6:00PM each evening.

When you arrive, please go to Building A (looks like large airplane hangar). The door will be locked, however, a staff member will let you in and escort you to your classroom.

The apprenticeship will end around 12:30PM on the last day.

What to Wear

Activities will be classroom based, in the shelter and outdoors. Students will spend time working hands-on with dogs and should wear comfortable clothing that may get slightly dirty. Attire for the class is casual.

We recommend:

  • Close-toed shoes
  • Pants or Jeans
  • Layers
  • We encourage all our students to proudly wear shirts or items from their home shelters!

Texas weather is unpredictable, so it is recommended to check the daily weather forecast prior to your visit. You can learn more about our weather here.

Food & Meals

Coffee will be provided. If you use a particular creamer please plan to bring it. AAC has vending machines for sodas and you will have access to water.

We will have a planned dinner on Thursday evening. Details will be provided during the apprenticeship. Attendance is optional but encouraged as it’s a great opportunity to network and celebrate the week. Please let the instructors know if you would prefer to skip this meal.

Homework Assignment

As part of your marketing assignment you will have an opportunity to take a dog on a sleepover. If you would like to do this please make sure to reserve dog friendly accommodations. Although the Holiday Inn Town Lake normally does not allow dogs they have made an exception to allow our students to do sleepovers.

Trip Recommendations

You may want to reach out to fellow students in your class by e-mail or via Facebook to coordinate lodging. Previous students have found it helpful to be able to share transportation as well as the opportunity to socialize. Lodging recommendations can be found here.

We encourage you to rent a car as the transportation needs for the week get very expensive using a rideshare or taxi service. Another option is to coordinate and share a rental car with another student. You can find planning your trip recommendations here.

We look forward to seeing you in Austin!
